Pavel Štecha (1944–2004) founded the photography studio at UMPRUM and taught at FAMU for twenty years, and is undoubtedly a seminal figure of Czech photography. While his post-1989 photographs of Václav Havel and coloured photographs of architecture are his best-known works, his meticulous devotion to each of his projects was truly unique in the Czech context of the 1970s, and supported in many cases by his work with sociologists (Traffic in the City, Department Stores, Žižkov, The Sídliště Phenomenon, and so on). He began working on the Cottagers (Chataři) project while still a student at FAMU, and showed it at his first solo exhibition at Činoherní klub.
